The Next Patch of Light

You do not have to carry the whole road today. Just walk toward the next patch of light.

The reflection

Come walk with me for a minute.

Here is today’s truth:

Resilience is not the ability to carry everything without breaking.

It is the wisdom to stop trying to carry everything at once.

After Hurricane Laura, we went months without power. We had no running water for ten days. Bridges were down, familiar places were gone, and ordinary life had become a series of problems that all seemed urgent.

At first, my mind kept trying to solve the entire disaster.

Where would we get water? How long would the food last? When would the power return? How would we rebuild everything that had been damaged or lost?

But there was no answer big enough for all of it.

So the question had to become smaller:

What do we need before the sun goes down?

Water for today. A way to charge the phone. Something everyone could eat. A check on the people we loved.

We did not rebuild our lives in one brave, shining moment.

We rebuilt them in small decisions—one after another—until those decisions became a path home.

So here is today’s resilience practice:

When life feels too large, shrink the horizon.

Take a piece of paper and make three small headings:

Right now. Before I sleep. Not today.

Choose one thing for the first two. Let everything else rest beneath the third.

“Not today” does not mean never.

It means you are allowed to meet this moment with the strength you actually have—not the strength you think you ought to have.

You do not have to carry the whole road today, sha.

Just walk toward the next patch of light.

Come as you are.

Leave a little steadier.

And know, the light is always chasing you.

When life feels too large, shrink the horizon.

On a piece of paper, make three headings:

  1. Right now.
  2. Before I sleep.
  3. Not today.

Choose one thing for the first two. Let everything else rest beneath the third. “Not today” does not mean never.
