Tonight: The Bayou Remembers.

Chapter One: Before Daylight.

She came before daylight, with three boats and a buyer for cargo she hadn't stolen yet.

The flour was for the kitchens.

The cloth would pay the crew.

The coffee, she insisted, was essential.

I knew my girl.

Light on his face.

Darkness everywhere he needed to see.

Mind your passage.

What?

The water's falling. You'll want somebody who knows the way.

How much?

Well. He had asked.

You said you knew the way.

I do.

It's essential.

You've done this before.

You're taking it remarkably well.

I'm trying to remember your face.

Oh, you will.

While she enjoyed herself, the water kept falling.

She knew the turn they had to make.

She knew the shallow place beyond it.

Still, she reached for the cloth.

I touched the hull, and she felt it in the rail beneath her hand.

Broussard.

That boat has to get home.

I know.

Lâche ça. We're away.

Oh, so even you have a limit to what you can take?

For one moment, I thought she might climb back aboard simply to have the last word.

Instead, she pushed them clear.

I was proud of that.

I did not mention it.

The passage out was narrow enough that the branches brushed their shoulders.

Rémy took the difficult turn.

Broussard shifted the load when he asked, then leaned into the work beside him.

The hull whispered, then began to drag over mud.

Everyone felt it.

For several breaths, there was only the scrape of poles, the soft knock of wood,

and the sound of people putting all their strength into a thing.

Then the boat moved freely.

Nobody cheered.

They still had flour to keep dry.

Farther out, salt water moved against the hull of a particular ship.

Be kind to yourselves and each other out there.

Marr Field Notes — Chapter One

Dr. Elspeth Marr | Water, weight, and the traces of everyday life

Before considering the value of that cloth, I would want its weight.

A boat floating at rest displaces water equal in weight to itself and everything it carries. Adding cargo makes it settle lower, increasing its draft—the depth of hull below the waterline. In a shallow passage, that leaves less clearance beneath the boat. Broussard’s extra bundle would therefore have affected more than the morning’s profit. I would want its weight and the boat’s dimensions before estimating how much.

The falling water also requires attention. Wetland water levels respond to rainfall, river flow, groundwater exchange and, where connected to tidal waters, the tide. The chapter does not establish the cause of this particular fall. An ebb tide is a possible explanation. I would still require a location and measurements before adopting it.

The flour, cloth, tools, and coffee interest me as much as the weapons. Material remains can help us investigate food, work, and exchange, but their context matters: where they were found, what accompanied them, and how they came to be there. I would not identify a particular raid—or its participants—from a cargo fragment alone. I would, however, want to know what else was found beside it.
